FS: Charlie Chaplin : Mabel at the Wheel 1914 -35mm Remnant approx 100ft

#1 by Jamie Hammond , Wed Oct 26, 2016 12:23 pm

Hi Guys,
I have Charlie Chaplin : Mabel at the Wheel 1914 - on 35mm, approx 100ft. This is dated somewhere between 1914 (release of the film) and 1930ish.
Its definitely nitrate so comes with its own set of issues, but is an amazing piece for any collection.
Im parting with a lot of film stuff from 8mm to this as I need the extra space. I have not got clue on the value of this item so feel feee to give me some close or make me an offer.

Best

Jamie

If it's a first run print, that would make it 102 years old! Eivind has a projector that would have been used to run one of those very old prints. :-)

Very cool!

This would have been cool to watch on this which I got a few weeks ago. A knowledged member of the collectors club in Norway believed it was from around 1925.

It's just too bad that the nitrate prints are highly flammable. :-/

I should have collected World in Flames on Nitrate 35mm :-)

That got a laugh out of me Eivind! Then we would have to do a documentary of "Oslo in Flames"!

I look forward to seeing the machine after Eivind restores it. :-)
My, how easy it is to get off topic!

How do you store the nitrate film?

At the moment the film is being kept in a ventilated plastic container in an outbuilding. My limited knowledge of nitrate and paranoia got the best of me...:)

Hello Jamie and welcome to the forum.
May I suggest that you remove the film from the plastic container and place in a metal one.
Keep the container as you have in an outbuilding and don't let and heat naked flame or anything hot near it.
If you are handling the film just be very carful as it can burst into flame and it produces its own oxygen so it just burns and burns.
I know you have only got a small amount but please be carefull, and by the way you should not post this to anyone obviously.
Sorry if I'm preaching to the converted.

Hi Gwyn,
Touch wood, it seems pretty stable. No tell tale signs of smell, vinegar or other but definitely a item for somebody who knows what they are doing. Regarding postage and shipping. For those thinking of making an offer, Royal Mail will not touch this in the UK, Fedex and a few other will and are happy to ship. This will obviously be shipped in the appropriate container but will go through a separate service for hazardous items....
